The Pearson level 3 award in education and training is an introductory teaching qualification for individuals looking to teach or train in further education, adult learning, or workplace settings. The course develops knowledge of teaching, learning and assessment, helping learners build confidence and practical skills within education and training environments.

Delivered over 12 weeks through bi-weekly onsite sessions at college, this course combines engaging classroom activities, discussion, microteaching, and independent study. Learners explore key teaching and learning theories, including how people learn, inclusive practice, differentiation, the spiral curriculum, and Vygotsky’s concept of the “more knowledgeable other.” The course also develops understanding of assessment, classroom management, communication, and the roles and responsibilities of teachers within education and training settings. Learners will reflect on their own practice while building the confidence and practical skills needed to teach or train adults effectively.

Explore the roles and responsibilities of a teacher, inclusive teaching approaches, and how learners develop.

Units include understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, understanding assessment in education and training, and understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training.
On completion, learners can progress into teaching, training, assessing or workplace mentoring roles across further education, adult learning, apprenticeships, and vocational training. The qualification also supports progression onto the level 5 diploma in teaching, CAVA/A1 Assessor qualifications, or a PGCE for learners who already hold a degree.
Entry requirements are set by the college. Learners should hold English at level 2 functional skills or GCSE Grade C/4 or above, alongside a good standard of written and spoken English. An interest in teaching, training, coaching or supporting learning within education or workplace settings is recommended.
Assessment methods include written assignments, a teaching and learning portfolio, lesson planning, a microteach session, and a short presentation. These practical and reflective assessment methods allow learners to apply teaching theories and demonstrate
A key highlight of the course is the opportunity to develop practical teaching skills through the microteach session and interactive classroom activities. Learners gain confidence planning and delivering training, adapting approaches to meet individual learner needs, and applying inclusive teaching strategies that can be used immediately within workplace or educational settings.
