ABOUT
COURSE

Investigate and develop a broad range of skills and techniques to work with a variety of materials with confidence and creativity.

You’ll explore pencil, ink, paint (acrylic, water colour and oil) along with print making. You’ll also develop a range of drawing and painting techniques, such as creating composition, perspective, colour theory, anatomy and working from life.

You’ll experiment with traditional and contemporary approaches while developing your own visual ideas and creative voice.

Work placement opportunities:
British Ironwork Centre, Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust
Progressing to: Degree in fine art, or jobs in graphic design, media advertising, interior design, photography
Aspirational careers: Jewellery designer, TV or film animator, concept artist, museum or gallery curator
5 GCSEs at grades 9-4, including Art 5, or a relevant Level 2 Art/Design qualification at Merit+, or a suitable portfolio.
Internally assessed and externally moderated Portfio and exam
Trips will include visits to universities and local, regional and national art exhibitions.

How have you found it so far?
The facilities here are amazing. I chose to come to Telford College because of the teachers – the way they explain things and work through them with you is unlike anything I’d seen anywhere else.

Emily, a former Madeley Academy student, has her sights set on a master’s degree in physics when she leaves college.

How have you found it so far?

“I’ve made a lot of new friends through my A level Business course. As well as being educational, the lessons are presented in a fun way, and I really enjoy the social aspect of life at the college. I’ve learned much more about business practices, and how companies work, through some interesting case studies.”

What they hope to do when they leave

“My plan is to study psychology at university – maybe to become a therapist, but I’d also like to be a professional boxer too!”

How have you found it so far?

“Coming to Telford College has given me chance to take part in the British Biology Olympiad. I really enjoyed the challenge – it tested my understanding and problem-solving skills in new ways, and achieving a silver award and placing in the top 10% of participants was very rewarding.”

What they hope to do when they leave

“I am hoping to study biology at Cardiff, so this has been an exciting way to push myself before university.”

How have you found it so far?

“I chose history because I’m particularly interested in understanding the role of Germany in changing politics in the years before the Second World War. And on the subject of politics, it was great to go on a trip to the House of Commons, and the House of Lords, to get a better understanding of how we do politics here in the UK.”

What they hope to do when they leave

“I’d like to join the Army through the university route. I’ve really enjoyed my time here; the support and the vibe at Telford College is very friendly. It creates an atmosphere where you can talk to people that you maybe don’t know too well, and make new friends.”

How have you found it so far?

“I love the fact that maths is such a challenging course that it allows me to think in a whole new way, and you learn something new every day. The college builds you up for the future, so you can go anywhere you’d like. There’s a mixture of freedom, structure in place, and massive support from teachers that you don’t find in many places. They’re always there to help you.”

What they hope to do when they leave

“Maths can take you pretty much anywhere. I’m hoping to go into the forces and join the navy as an apprentice engineer – but this is a course which can take you down a university route or an apprenticeship.”

How have you found it so far?

“It’s very easy to make friends here. I love the independence the college gives you. It’s a big step away from secondary school – you have a lot more freedom. Of the A levels I’m studying here, criminology is definitely the one I’m finding most interesting because it’s a good mix of practical work alongside theory.”

What they hope to do when they leave

“It’s convinced me that I want to go to university to study psychology with some sort of forensic context. A lot of people think criminology is about why people commit a crime, but it’s also about the law-making processes as well, and understanding different roles in the criminal justice system like lawyers, judges and police officers. That creates so many opportunities.”
