The level 4 diploma in therapeutic counselling is a two-year, part-time professional qualification designed for learners who wish to train as therapeutic counsellors. Building on existing counselling knowledge and skills, the course develops the professional competence, self-awareness and ethical practice required to work safely and effectively with clients in a range of counselling settings.

Throughout the programme, you will explore counselling theory, ethics, diversity and inclusion, mental health, professional practice, and research, while developing advanced counselling skills through experiential learning, skills practice and reflective development. As part of the qualification, you will complete a minimum of 100 hours of supervised counselling practice within an approved placement, enabling you to apply your learning in a real-world setting.

Delivered one evening per week, this programme combines academic study with practical skills development to prepare you for employment within the counselling profession or progression towards professional membership with recognised counselling bodies, subject to meeting their individual requirements.

In year one, students will study a range of modules, including:
– Self Awareness for Counsellors
– Advanced Counselling Skills (cont. into year 2)
– Professional and Organisational Issues

In year two, students will study a range of modules building on the first year’s study, these include:
– Research Methodologies in Counselling
– Counselling Placement
– Counselling Theory
– Counselling in a Diverse Society
This qualification provides progression into professional counselling practice, postgraduate study, and continuing professional development. Students may also progress towards registration with recognised professional counselling bodies, subject to meeting their individual membership and practice requirements.
Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills (please note we do not accept courses that have been completed online or via distance learning)
A good level of written and spoken English skills – these will be assessed at application and interview stage.

as a mandatory requirement for this course
Students will be exposed to a variety of different assessment methods to ensure you are assessed holistically; – Counselling skills assessments (practical triads) – Written reports and assignments – Reflective accounts and diaries – Presentations – I
The highlight of the course is the placement module, where students get hands-on, real world experience of supporting clients as they develop their counselling skills, knowledge and behaviours.
