New Student Council sets out its inclusive agenda

Will Carpenter, Ann Omanko and Connor Oswin

Telford College’s newly elected Student Council has outlined an ambitious and inclusive agenda for the year ahead, pledging to amplify student voice, strengthen cross‑campus collaboration, and champion fresh ideas that enrich college life.

The team says it wants to create a connected, confident and proactive student community where every learner feels heard, supported, and empowered to shape their college experience.

Second year student Connor Oswin, who is studying engineering, has been elected as the new president, with Ann Omanko vice president for the Wellington campus, and Will Carpenter vice president for the new Telford 6th campus in the town centre.

Connor has very much embraced life as a Telford College student in the past year, founding the college’s Chess Club as part of his role as enrichment officer on the Student Council last year.

He won the Inspirational Learner of the Year Award for 2026, and was also chosen to cut the ribbon on behalf of the college for the opening of the new £2 million library at the Wellington campus.

“I want to build a bridge between the students and the student council so that the students have the biggest say on what is done,” he said.

Ann Omanko is a second-year IT student who has already provided valuable input to the student voice process as a class rep last year.

More recently she has been working with the college’s marketing team on a video project called ‘If I were Prime Minister for a day…’ for Democracy Week.

Will Carpenter is a new student to the college this year, but staff say he has already proven himself a valuable team player during an Arthog Outreach enrichment trip, embracing challenging activities and supporting other students to do the same.

Telford College’s enrichment co-ordinator Rosie Baldwin-Jones said: “The election gives our students a fantastic opportunity to engage with democracy, represent their peers, and have a real say in college life.

“We’d like to praise all the candidates for their efforts. The election process saw students put themselves out there, campaign across both campuses, and showcase their ideas for their peers to consider.

“It was a great example of student engagement, leadership, and Telford College student voice in action.”
