This lasts approximately 15 months. An accounts and finance assistant is an integral part of a company’s team, responsible for helping with junior accounting duties. These could include basic bookkeeping activities working with sales and purchase ledgers, running calculations, and recording of cash and data entry. You will learn about software packages such as Sage, TaxCalc, Xero and QuickBooks. You will be required to attend college for one day a week.

During the first 12 months apprentices will complete an On Programme Learning (OPL) and cover units and unit assessments for advanced bookkeeping, final accounts preparation, management accounting, costing, indirect tax, ethics for accountants and spreadsheets for accounting. At the same time apprentices will also complete an e-portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence in the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in the standards.
Careers in Assistant Accountant, Trainee Accounting Technician, Accounts Clerk, Cashier, Finance Assistant, Purchase Ledger Clerk, Sales Ledger Clerk, Audit Trainee, Credit Controller
Progression: Many apprentices remain employed with the company and move onto the Level 3 Professional Accounting Technician Apprenticeship.
Apprentices must hold at least a GCSE grade 1 or equivalent in English and maths and will be required to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills as part of their apprenticeship. Apprentices aged 19 and over may opt out of this requirement but need to ensure suitable working levels within both English and Maths.
