A dental nurse provides chair side support to all dental professionals and ensure high standards of cleanliness and infection control. Dental nurses prepare instruments, materials and medicaments for dental procedures, mix materials, sterilise instruments, keep records, note dictation, carry out stock control and ensure patient comfort and safety throughout their visit.

• Undertake routine dental nursing clinical and technical procedures and tasks relevant to the assessment, and diagnosis of patients.
• Undertake routine dental nursing clinical and technical procedures and tasks relevant to treatment planning and onward referral of patients.
• Provide professional leadership within the team working in partnership with patients, dental teams, other health and social care professionals.
• Promote oral health to individuals and the wider population and raise awareness of its role in preventing ill health amongst communities
Dental nurse career progression offers pathways from trainee to specialized, managerial, or clinical roles.

Experienced nurses can advance by obtaining postgraduate certifications in radiography, sedation, or orthodontics, or by becoming a senior/head dental murse, practice manager, clinical trainer, or qualified dental hygienist/therapist.
Learners must be at least 16 years old. Apprentices must hold at least a GCSE grade 4 or equivalent in English & maths. Apprentices agreed 19 and over may opt out of this requirement but need to ensure suitable working levels within both English & maths.
