For James Thompson, becoming an HGV driver wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment career change – it was the realisation of a dream that he had since childhood.

His passion for trucks started at an early age, riding along with his Uncle Martin in his lorry and growing up around family members who worked in the transport industry. Annual trips to Truckfest Peterborough only strengthened that passion, with one visit even doubling as the celebration of his 13th birthday. “I’ve always had an interest in anything with an engine, especially larger vehicles,” James explains. “Getting my CAT C licence wasn’t just about gaining another qualification – it was about turning a lifelong interest into a career.”

Although James has only recently achieved his CAT C (Class 2) licence, this wasn’t his first experience with Dulson Training. Back in 2019, he completed his B+E training so he could tow a trailer for camping adventures. After a positive experience and a first-time pass, there was never much doubt about where he would return when the time came to pursue his HGV licence.

“I completed my B+E licence with Dulson because the whole experience was stress-free and well organised. The instructors were friendly, supportive and made me feel relaxed throughout my training. When I decided it was finally time to pursue my CAT C licence, there was only one training provider I wanted to use.”

James gained his CAT C licence through our fully funded SWAP programme, delivered in partnership with Telford College. Looking back, he describes the entire process as straightforward and accessible, praising not only the support he received from Dulson Training but also the preparation provided throughout the classroom element of the programme. 

“Our tutor at Telford College prepared us for everything we needed, from drivers’ hours and working time regulations to the medical, licence paperwork, theory tests and the Driver CPC. One of the best parts was hearing his real-life stories from his own experience as an HGV driver, which really brought the learning to life.”

Just as memorable as the learning itself was the atmosphere within the group. James made lasting friendships during the course, describing the environment as relaxed, welcoming and supportive from day one.

When it came to practical training, one lesson stood above all others. Like many new HGV drivers, James quickly realised that driving a large vehicle isn’t just about controlling it – it’s about anticipating the actions of everyone else on the road.

“The biggest thing that stood out to me was just how important observation is. During one drive another driver made an unexpected manoeuvre around the lorry, and it really reinforced how quickly situations can develop. Thanks to the excellent training from Mark, I’d already developed the habit of constantly checking my mirrors and maintaining full awareness of everything around the vehicle. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me throughout my driving career.”

James is also quick to recognise the people who helped him along the way. He credits both Mark and Craig from Dulson Training with creating an environment where he felt comfortable learning , asking questions and building confidence behind the wheel: “They were patient, calm and always explained things in a way that was easy to understand. Their encouragement gave me confidence, and I honestly believe their experience and support played a huge part in helping me pass.”

That support has already paid dividends. Shortly after passing his CAT C test, James secured his first HGV driving role and is excited to begin his new career. While he knows there’s still plenty to learn, including the day-to-day realities of the job, he has already spent time shadowing an experienced driver and is looking forward to putting everything he learned during training into practice.

Looking ahead, James has no intention of stopping there. He is already planning to return to Dulson Training to gain his CAT C+E (Class 1) licence, with the long-term ambition of becoming a livestock transporter and combining his love of driving with the Animal Management Diploma he achieved at college – “Being able to combine my passion for driving with my love of working with animals would be the perfect career for me.”

For anyone considering an HGV career, James has a simple message: “Go for it. It’s natural to feel nervous, but don’t let that stop you. The instructors are there to support you from the beginning and they’ll help build your confidence every step of the way.”

It’s advice backed up by his own experience. After training with Dulson on two separate occasions, James says he ” would recommend Dulson Training without hesitation” and is already looking forward to returning for his CAT C+E Upgrade.
