Teenager Grace Coffey has praised Telford College for giving her the confidence, skills and direction to pursue her ambition of becoming a sports therapist.

Grace grew up in Telford and previously attended Telford Priory School – now New Road Academy – before enrolling on a level three health and fitness programme at Telford College in 2024.

She has graduated with a triple distinction, and secured a place at University College Birmingham, where she will study sports therapy.

The 18-year-old said she chose the Telford College course after seeing the wide range of units on offer, and recognising how closely they aligned with her long‑standing interest in sport, fitness and wellbeing.

“I’d been interested in this area for a couple of years, so when I saw how varied the course was, I knew it was the right choice,” she said.

Grace said her college experience exceeded expectations, with a balance of coursework and hands‑on practical learning that kept her motivated and engaged.

“I thought it would be constant coursework, but it was a really good split. The practical sessions were enjoyable, and the trips we went on were definitely the most memorable – including the sports hall athletics finals in Shrewsbury.”

She says the skills she developed at Telford College have played a major role in preparing her for the next step.

“College has set me up for my future career. There’s a lot of coursework, so you learn time management and independence. Planning and delivering sports sessions also helped build my confidence – you have to be organised, prepared and able to lead.”

Grace is encouraging other young people to consider the Telford College course, saying its breadth opens doors to a wide range of careers. “There are so many different units, and they give you a real insight into all the different pathways you can take. The practical elements are really enjoyable too.”

Grace is among a group of sports students who are looking forward to beginning the next chapter of their sports-related education after graduating from Telford College this summer.

Markku Reynolds, who won the student of the year award for the sport curriculum area, has secured a place at Staffordshire University to study sports & exercise science.

Elliot Wilbrey is going to the University of Leicester to read physiotherapy, and Seini Vuevueika is starting an apprenticeship in sports development.
